Yolonda Roach (Smith) - Class Of 1972

Yolonda Barbette Catherine Roach-Smith born June 16, 1954, died July 23, 2007.

Yolonda attended Drew and Gillespie Elementary Schools and graduated from CVS in 1972.  She attended Weaver Airline School to become a flight attendant, graduating with "flying colors"  She later chose to join the workforce and was hired by Illinois Bell/AT&T in 1973 and retired from there in December of 2002 after 30 years.

Yolonda married Dwight Anthony Smith and from that union she has one son, Robert Anthony Smith.

Yolonda was on the reunion committee for our 30 plus class reunion, just one of the many activities that she participated in such as singing in her church choir, Usher Board and a member of the Black Angels Motorcycle Club.

Yo-Yo will always be a part of us.

Wow! Being out of touch leads to missing so much. Yoland was one of my very favorite class mates. For two years she and a group of us shared "shop" class: health occupation. And oh what young fun did we have riding the Jeffery Express (listening to boom-boxes and singing) from the school to downtown, and then on other CTA vehicals to the County Hospital where we learned and earned. During the last year, I think it was the first Wendedsday of each month we were dismissed from school after "division." Then six class members would steal away to Flowers' home, on Stony Island, to listen to music, dance, and play. As I had no idea that she rode motorcycles (as I used to), I had no idea that she left this plane. Yoland was "alive," and in my company she lived happily, without a care - as all high schoolers should live. I loved it when she'd seek me out, grab my arm in laughter, and call out my name as if she's singing: "O-m-a-w-a-t-a." And as long as I live she'll remain a good memory in my heart. Peace
